This guide provides links to research databases available through the library as well as selected websites for Health and Medicine.
Articles and books not held by Torreyson Library may be requested through Interlibrary Loan. For research and reference help, e-mail the Cybrarian. If you need immediate help, contact the Reference desk at 450-5224.

Academic Search Elite
- A multi-disciplinary database offering full text for more than 2,050 scholarly journals. Covering virtually every area of academic study, it offers full text information for many of it's journals dating as far back as 1985.
- American Chemical Society Journal Archives
- Provides access to 120 years of the most cited chemistry research. This new online archive lets you search the full text of all titles published by ACS from 1879. The ACS Journal Archives is an online database that is rolling in nature; that is, every year, a new year's worth of content will be added.

BasicBIOSIS
- Focuses on general life science research from around the world. BasicBIOSIS contains coverage of nearly 300 of the most popular life sciences publications as well as meeting reports, reviews, and newspapers.
- BioMed Central
- Over 100 Open Access journals covering all areas of Biology and Medicine. Most journals are peer-reviewed.

- Britannica Online
- Includes the Encyclopedia Britannica, Britannica Concise Encyclopedia, as well as Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary and Collegiate Thesaurus. Search results include articles in the encyclopedia, web sites, and links to relevant journal articles.

CINAHL(Cumulated Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature)
- Offers complete coverage of English-language nursing journals and publications from the National League for Nursing and the American Nurses' Association, covering nursing, biomedicine, health sciences librarianship, alternative complementary medicine, consumer health and 17 allied health disciplines. In addition, this database offers access to health care books, nursing dissertations, selected conference proceedings, standards of practice, educational software, audiovisuals and book chapters.

- Directory of Open Access Journals
- This service covers free, full text, quality controlled scientific and scholarly journals. There are now 1608 journals in the directory. Currently 402 journals are searchable at article level. Subject areas include: Biology and Life Sciences, Chemistry, History and Archaeology, Philosophy and Religion, Arts and Architecture, Business and Economics, Earth and Environmental Sciences, Health Sciences, Languages and Literatures, Mathematics and Statistics, Physics and Astronomy, and Social Sciences.

- Provides access to free medical journals online. Many are available immediateky, while others have a waiting period of 6 to 24 months. Some will require registration (free) to access the articles.
- Health Reference Center
- Provides an integrated collection of general interest health and
fitness magazines, medical and professional periodicals, reference books and pamphlets. Records are available in a combination of indexing, abstracts or full text formats. Designed for nursing and allied health students, as well as consumer health researchers.
- Health and Wellness Resource Center
- Provides access to magazines, journals, newspapers, definitions, directories, and information on: Fitness, Pregnancy, Medicine, Nutrition, Diseases, Public Health, Occupational Health and Safety, Alcohol and Drug abuse, Prescription Drugs, etc. Included are links to diet, cancer, and health assessment sites as well as government databases.

Health Source - Consumer and Nursing/Academic Edition
- Provides access to nearly 300 full text, consumer health periodicals, as well as, full text, indexing and abstracts for more than 300 periodicals. Also included is searchable full text for nearly 1,100 health-related pamphlets; 135 health reference books, including books published by the People's Medical Society; more than 4,500 Clinical Reference Systems reports (in English and Spanish); and Stedman's Medical Dictionary. In addition, this database includes Clinical Pharmacology, which provides access to up-to-date, concise and clinically relevant drug monographs for all U.S. prescription drugs, hard-to-find herbal and nutritional supplements, over-the-counter products and new drugs.
- Highwire Press
- Free Online Full-text Articles. HighWire Press is a division of the Stanford University Libraries, which produces the online versions of high-impact, peer-reviewed journals and other scholarly content. They provide a repository of free full-text life science articles, with more than 850,000 free, full-text articles online. Since 1995, with the launch of the Journal of Biological Chemistry (JBC), to the continuous online production of hundreds of prestigious journals, such as Science Magazine, the New England Journal of Medicine, PNAS, and JAMA. Many are free, while others are not available until 6 to 24 months after publication. Some journals do require registration for free content.

- Lexis-Nexis Academic Universe
- Provides full-text documents from over 5,600 news, business, legal, medical, and reference publications with a variety of flexible search options.
- Medline
- Bibliographic database covering the fields of medicine, nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine, the health care system, and the preclinical sciences. MEDLINE contains bibliographic citations and author abstracts from more than 4,800 biomedical journals published in the United States and 70 other countries. The database contains over 12 million citations dating back to the mid-1960's. Coverage is worldwide, but most records are from English-language sources or have English abstracts.

- Provides access to 10,912 eBooks and 3,407 publicly accessible eBooks.
- Ovid Nursing
- An aggregate of hundreds of scientific, technical, and medical journals from over 50 publishers and societies. Full-text available for subscribed journals. Subject areas include: Clinical Medicine, Behavioral and Social Sciences, Life Sciences, Nursing, and Physical Science and Engineering.
- Physical Education Index
- Provides records that are indexed and classified from peer-reviewed journals, report literature, conference proceedings, trade magazines, patents, articles from the popular press, and many other publications. Abstracts feature a wide variety of content, ranging from physical education curricula, to sports medicine, to dance. Other coverage includes sport law, kinesiology, motor learning, recreation, standardized fitness tests, sports equipment, business and marketing, coaching and training, and sport sociology/psychology. Health education and physical therapy are also covered.

- Provides full-text access to 321 journals in the Life Sciences, including Biology, Health, Medicine, and Nutrition.
- ProQuest Research Library
- Provides access to full-text journals across a wide range of subject areas, including arts, business, children, education, general interest, health, humanities, international, law, military, multicultural, psychology, sciences, social sciences, and women's interests.

- From the American Psychological Association, contains over two million citations and summaries of journal articles, book chapters, books and dissertations, all in the field of psychology, dating as far back as 1840. Journal coverage, which dates back to the 1800s, includes international material selected from nearly 2,000 periodicals in over 24 languages. Also includes information about the psychological aspects of related disciplines such as medicine, psychiatry, nursing, sociology, education, pharmacology, physiology, linguistics, anthropology, business and law.
- Public Library of Science
- A nonprofit scientific publishing venture that will provide scientists with high-quality, high-profile journals in which to publish their most important work, while making the full contents freely available for anyone to read, distribute, or use for their own research. Published papers are peer-reviewed.
- PubMed
- The U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) free digital archive of biomedical and life sciences journal literature.

- ScienceDirect
- Offers an electronic collection of science, technology and medicine full text journals and bibliographic information. Full-text is available for subscribed journals only.
- SpringerLink
- Complete tables of content, abstracts and full-text articles from more than 650 journals. Full-text available for subscribed journals. May search using keyword or publication title. For article searching, click the Advanced tab next to the top Search Bar and select "Articles by Text" or scroll down to Browse and Explore.
- Wilson Web
- Provides a bibliographic database that indexes and abstracts articles of at least one column in length from English-language periodicals published in the United States and elsewhere plus the full text of selected periodicals. Includes the following indexes: Applied Science and Technology, Art, Biological and Agricultural, Business, Education, General Science, Humanities, Legal, Readers’ Guide, and Social Science.

- Provides a single point of access to a wide variety of reports and numeric public health data.
- Clinical Trials.gov
- Provides regularly updated information about federally and privately supported clinical research in human volunteers. ClinicalTrials.gov gives information about a trial's purpose, who may participate, locations, and phone numbers for more details.
- Hardin MD
- From the University of Iowa, this site provides lists, or directories, of information in health and medicine, including links to medical pictures. Divided into subject categoies, including AIDS, Cancer, Heart Disease, Infectious Bites, Women's Health, and more.

- Provides an annoted list of websites, reviewed by Librarian's, related to Health and Medicine.

- MedlinePlus brings together authoritative information from NLM, the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and other government agencies and health-related organizations. Preformulated MEDLINE searches are included in MedlinePlus and give easy access to medical journal articles. MedlinePlus also has extensive information about drugs, an illustrated medical encyclopedia, interactive patient tutorials, and latest health news.

- National Center for Health Statistics
- NCHS is the Nation’s principal health statistics agency and compiles statistical information to guide actions and policies to improve the health of our people. Offers a variety of health statistics at the national and state levels.
- National Health Organization
- The National Health Information Center (NHIC) is a health information referral service. NHIC puts health professionals and consumers who have health questions in touch with those organizations that are best able to provide answers. The site offers a Health Information Resource Database as well as referral publications and policy documents.
- National Library of Medicine
- The National Library of Medicine (NLM), on the campus of the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, is the world's largest medical library. The Library collects materials in all areas of biomedicine and health care, as well as works on biomedical aspects of technology, the humanities, and the physical, life, and social sciences. Offers resources in a variety of areas and includes resources areas especially for the public, health care professionals, and researchers.
- National Women's Health Information Center
- The National Women's Health Information Center is a service of the Office on Women's Health (OWH) in the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). As a Federal clearinghouse, NWHIC provides over 1,800 organization and 4,300 publication resources relating to women's health. Included is information on all major health concerns for women, prevention information for women, frequently asked questions about women's health, the latest news and calendar events pertaining to women's health and a "What about Men's Health?" section too! Information about the Office on Women's Health and its programs, and initiatives are accessible through the NWHIC web site as well.
- Office of Minority Health
- The Office of Minority Health was established in 1985 by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). It advises the Secretary and the Office of Public Health and Science on public health program activities affecting American Indians and Alaska Natives, Asian Americans, Blacks/African Americans, Hispanics/Latinos, Native Hawaiians, and other Pacific Islanders. The site offers publications, data/statistics, and health links.

- PDR.net, the online home of the PDR®, allows its users to access the full power of the PDR by offering integrated medical informaton and education tools. Updated frequently, this site contains the drug information and resources needed daily by its prescriber user base arranged together in one site for convenience and ease-of-use. Free registration available to medical students.
- RxList
- Provides information on a variety of drugs including description, clinical pharmacology, indications/dosage, side effects/drug interactions, warnings/precautions, overdosage/contraindications, and patient information.
- United States Department of Health and Human Services
- Provides a variety of information including: clinical information, information for consumers and patients, funding opportunities, data and surveys, research findings, quality and patient safety, and information on specific populations (women, children, low income, etc.).
- Virtual Hospital
- Virtual Hospital is a digital health sciences library created in 1992 at the University of Iowa to help meet the information needs of health care providers and patients. The Virtual Hospital digital library contains thousands of textbooks and booklets for health care providers and patients. PRovides information for providers and patients, and can be searched by topic, speciality, location/body system, and sympton.

- Provides food and nutrition information, including ADA's Nutrition Care Manual online. Information also provided on careers and students, conferences, government affairs, and continuing education.
- Arbor Nutrition Guide
- Provides links to various nutrition and food websites and search engines. Broken into categores for clinical, food, and food science.
- Center for Human Nutrition
- From the Johns Hopkins Bloomburg School of Public Health, this site offers research and resources in the area of nutrition. Information may be searched by Country, Project, Research Area (Maternal & Child Nutrition, Micronutrients/Minerals, and Diet, Lifestyle, & Chronic Disease), Faculty, or keyword.
- International Food Information Council Foundation
- This site seeks to communicate science-based information on food safety and nutrition to health and nutrition professionals, educators, journalists, government officials and others providing information to consumers.
