The main graphic novel collection is organized according to the Library of Congress (LOC) Classification system. Subject matter determines the call number assigned to nonfiction graphic novels. The Library of Congress Classification Outline lays out the call numbers that correspond with specific subjects. Call numbers appear on the spine or front of each graphic novel.
Generally, graphic novels have a call number that falls within the range of PN6700 to PN6790. Call numbers are organized in alphabetical order, followed by numerical order. The next letter should be read in alphabetical order, followed by a decimal number; this pattern holds for all remaining numbers and letters. The last number is the year of publication.

Most of the graphic novels in the library's main collection have a call number beginning with "PN6727" or "PN6728." Though there are many exceptions, items starting with "PN6727" are often graphic novels that stand alone, and those starting with "PN6728" are often graphic novels in a series.
Graphic novels that begin with "PN6728" are frequently followed by a letter that indicates the character, team, or series most prominently featured in the graphic novels.
Even though this tip provides a rough guide for browsing, your best bet for finding a graphic novel containing a particular character, team, or other element is to use the catalog to search.
All children's graphic novels have the Dewey Decimal call number of "741.5," followed by the first three letters of the author's last name. The graphic novels are alphabetized according to the author's last name.
